Happy Monday!
I hope you had an incredible Thanksgiving week with the people who mean the most to you. As we start this new week and head toward the close of the year, it’s time to get our minds right and set the tone.
Welcome to Note of Strength, one thought each week to offer perspective, spark inspiration, and encourage action.

Let’s dive in.

We hosted Thanksgiving this year, and family came in from all over the country. The house was loud, warm, and full the way the holidays should feel. And right in the middle of it, my brother-in-law said something that made everyone laugh, but the truth in it stayed with me:

“Leave your shit at the door.”

He said it half jokingly, but the meaning ran deep. Because every one of us carries something, frustration, stress, old stories we haven’t let go of, or worries about tomorrow that pull us out of today. Life hands us all a backpack of “shit,” and most days we don’t even realize how heavy it’s gotten.

But when you step into a moment that matters, family, connection, presence the most powerful decision you can make is to set that weight down. Leave it at the door. Walk in lighter. Walk in available. Walk in present.

It brought me back to a rule from my graduate assistant days as a strength coach at Penn State. Before athletes entered the weight room, they were reminded:

Whatever happened earlier stays outside.
Whatever you’re thinking about later stays outside too.

Inside that room, the only thing that counted was the rep in front of you, the effort you gave, and the attitude you showed up with.

Over time, I realized the “door” itself is symbolic.
It marks the line between the past you can’t change and the present you can.

And in a world that moves faster every year with constant shifts, constant noise, and constant demands, that skill becomes essential:

Learn from the past without carrying it.
Prepare for the future without living in it.
Show up fully for the moment that’s actually happening.

Because this moment, right here, right now,
is the only one that counts.
And how you choose to walk through that door?
That’s everything.
